Insurers Deal – Good News For Homeowners

Summary:
The increase flooding in the last few years, have made numerous properties uninsurable. This article looks at the new proposals the government has agreed with insurance companies to enable  more householders to purchase cheap home insurance . Nevertheless, there will be certain people that still cannot aquire it.

Thousands and thousands of homeowners will still be able buy essential insurance against flooding. It has been announced that insurance companies have arrived at a deal with the government after they committed to a long term flood protection accord.

Under the arrangement, insurers have guaranteed to afford protection to any property considered to have a threatof less than one in sixty five from flooding.

As long as proposals are in place to lessen the risk to a tolerable level within the next six years, insurance companies will carry on making insurance available to existing small business customers and domestic. The Environment Minister said that to attain these strategies the government has consigned itself to a long term thirty year campaign to optimise flood barriers.
The government plans to upgrade defences and implore householders to safeguard their homes would mean that an existing statement of policy granted by insurers could finish in 2013.

This arrangement comes over a year after floods struck areas of Gloucestershire, Hull and the Midlands. These floods caused 180,000 claims for flood-damaged businesses, cars and houses. Settlements from insurers came to a shocking three billion pounds.
The Minister told BBC World Service Daily programme: “The insurance companies very logically said that it is essential to have a long-standing policy – twenty six years is the figure that we are suggesting.

“We are investigating surface water flooding, coastal flooding as well as river flooding, to ensure that the enlarged investment that we have, is continous in the long term.”

Then again, the Minister omitted to say how many homes may fall outside the one in fifty five risk group and be graded as not impregnable against floods, saying just: “That is not for government to state.”

He also said how necessary it was that the Environment Bureau makes use of its new controls to thwart any new developments that may be in danger from flooding. He also said that life assurance companies  were now ready to provide better premiums to property owners who do something to make their properties durableagainst the likelihood of rising flood waters
He added: “What has transformed is the climate change forecasts that the scientists are giving us – that the extreme weather conditions are going to worsen in the next 10 – 20 years.”That necessitate a long-term policy … It is something we have been discussing with the insurers. They, quite rightly, want to have promises that properties are protected and we, quite justifiably, want to do that anyhow.”

The Chairman of the Association of British Insurers said the agreement would make sure flood protection continued to be widely accessible to householders.
“This deal is excellent news for everybody in danger of flooding,” he added. “We are happy that the government accepts that a long-term investment proposal, effectively funded, is the best way to manage the increasing flood danger.”

The Association of British Insurers had formerly counselled that more than half a million houses might turn out to be uninsurable, unless more money is put into our flood fortifications.
